How we figure it

Bricks per square foot come from the face of one brick plus one mortar joint. A standard 8 x 2 1/4 in brick with a 3/8 in joint covers 8 3/8 x 2 5/8 in, so 144 divided by that area is about 6.5 bricks per square foot. Modular brick works out to about 6.75.

Wall area is length times height, minus windows and doors. Multiply by the number of brick layers: a veneer is one layer, and many older Chicago brick buildings have walls two or three bricks thick.

Mortar is the volume of the joints around each brick. Bags use Quikrete's figure that one 80 lb bag of Mortar Mix lays up to 37 standard bricks, so treat the bag count as a minimum.

Pallets assume about 500 bricks per pallet. Pallet counts vary by brick, so check with the yard.

Estimates only. Measure carefully and confirm quantities with your supplier or contractor before ordering.

Questions

About 6.5 for standard or Chicago common brick and 6.75 for modular brick, with a 3/8 in mortar joint. Larger bricks like king or utility need fewer.

Old Chicago common brick varies in size and color, so measure a few bricks and use the custom size. For repairs, reclaimed Chicago brick is often the closest match. Akats Supply sells it.

Plan on about 5% for cuts and breakage on a simple wall and more for walls with many openings or patterns. Reclaimed brick can need more because some pieces get culled.

Usually not. Tuckpointing replaces the mortar between bricks. You only need brick for spalled or broken units that get cut out and replaced.
